I Lied Last Time

Ah fuck sorry I’m sorry last time I said I was going to learn Digits 2. Instead, I ended up focusing on trying to make some more patches with synthesizers I’ve already used and worked on a song. I did end up trying something else that was new, which I will discuss near the end.

Here’s some sounds I made in DeXeD:

I ended up going down a bit of a weird rabbit hole of learning Afro-Cuban clave rhythms for 4/4 time, got this weird airy drum sound I like but need to refine a bit, and decided to mix the 2 together.

My terrible handwriting.

The other thing I tried, after being kind of disappointed in the 909 hi hat samples in the sampler kit I am using, was making some trashy industrial sounding hi hat noises in Charlatan. Hosting them in Charlatan is a bit unwieldy, I would have to automate the envelope to switch between an open and closed strike or run 2 instances of it, and that’s a lot of work. What I did instead was download One Small Clue’s Grace sampler synth and use that to host the hi hat sounds.

Result of the hi hat stuff below:

We’ve been having a lot of rain around here as well, so inspiration struck and I recorded about 8 minutes of rain out my bedroom window using the Yeti mic I got a few weeks ago. I cut that down to a 6 second sample and vocoded it with 2 octaves worth of sine waves. Then, I did some levels adjusting cause the dynamics were fucked between the high and low notes, and plugged that into Grace too.

Anyway, I still want to learn Digits 2 at some point but it’s getting to be where I’m in danger of getting distracted with all this shit again instead of actually writing a damn song, so I am gonna try to finish the lead part of that Afro Cuban influenced song and do a handful of others and maybe put a dorky little instrumental “EP” out on bandcamp.

Edit: U-u-u-update?!?!?! I finally start using Digits 2, but I don’t really talk about it because of reasons, maybe starting a synth punk EP who knows.
